Defining Holistic Health: Understanding the Whole Person

A simple guide to holistic health, conventional medicine, naturopathy, and integrative care.

Holistic definition

Holistic means understanding something as a whole and recognizing that its parts are interconnected and cannot be fully understood in isolation.

In healthcare, a holistic approach considers the whole person—not just a diagnosis or a single symptom. It recognizes that physical health, emotional well-being, mental health, relationships, lifestyle, and environment can all influence one another.

Allopathy and naturopathy

Allopathy is a term commonly used to describe conventional Western medicine. It generally refers to the use of evidence-based medical treatments, such as medications, surgery, and other clinical interventions, to diagnose and treat illness.

Naturopathy is a system of healthcare that emphasizes natural approaches, lifestyle changes, and the body's ability to support healing. Depending on the practitioner, it may include nutrition, herbal medicine, and other complementary therapies.

Natural does not automatically mean safe or effective. The quality of evidence and the individual's circumstances matter.

Integrative medicine

Integrative medicine is a whole-person approach to healthcare that combines conventional medical treatments with evidence-based complementary therapies, such as nutrition, acupuncture, and stress management.

The goal is to support health and wellness while considering the person's physical, emotional, and social needs.
